Poland, Żmijowiska, Church of the Dormition of the Virgin
The church was built on the site of an earlier sanctuary, for which no records have been preserved. On the wall of the sacristy, the date “1770” is engraved, although the schematisms of the Przemyśl Eparchy indicate 1786 as the construction year of the church. It was rebuilt and expanded several times, notably in 1881, when the old narthex was dismantled, and a new one was added to the nave as its part [1, p. 39]. During the interwar period, a rectangular sacristy was added behind the sanctuary [2, pp. 336–337].
After the deportation of Ukrainians, the church fell into disuse and has been slowly deteriorating. In the late 1950s, the porch collapsed, and the small wooden turret that adorned it is now located inside the church.
The fate of the church’s interior decorations is unknown; only two side altars with icons of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Cyril and Methodius have survived.
The bell tower, built next to the church in 1830, was dismantled for construction materials in the late 1940s [2, p. 402].
