Damian-Mykhailo Horniatkewych’s Iconostasis, 1908
Carving Restoration
The carving was made from two types of wood without priming or gilding, only covered with a protective varnish layer. During the first renewals of the monument, the entire structure of the iconostasis was primed and painted with oil-based paint. In subsequent interventions, the carving was coated with enamel paint. The royal doors were updated on both sides. The icons were also renewed and had damage caused by woodworms. Parts of the base of the deacon’s doors and the cornice of the icon of the Mother of God were missing. The prayer and prophetic row icons remained untouched.
Restoration supervisor – Halyna Druziuk. Chief art restorer – Petro Skop. Restorers: Mariia Skop and others.
During the restoration process, overpainting and primer layers were removed. Silvering and gilding were revealed, with losses filled using inserts made with mineral pigments. Significant abrasions on the royal doors and polychrome were covered with gold and silver leaf. Shellac was used to patinate the inserts. The structure was coated with damar varnish. No restoration work was conducted on the icons.
